The Refuge Plays
Roundabout Theatre | September 20, 2023 and October 8, 2023
Earlier today I purchased a ticket for tonight cause I saw Nicole Ari Parker talking about it on the Today show, and about 30 minutes before showtime I realized that jawn is 3 hours and 30 minutes long with two intermissions.
My pet peeve about Broadway… they let you know who’s performing when you get the playbill. We learned right before the show that Nicole had a medical emergency and that her Today show interview was pre-recorded. However, Britney (BeBe) Nicole Simpson (Nicole’s understudy) did a PHENOMENAL job playing “Early” and she was still on book. Mind you, the play is still in previews, and tonight was the third night of the show. Peeps, the show is a must-see! It’s an intergenerational story of a Black family over 70 years. The ancestor spirits did it for me. Had me thinking about my own lineage and spirit guides. Whew!
To be honest, I can’t even see NAP playing a great-grandma because she’s so FAB and ageless so I must see it again when she gets better!
And I did see it again... more on that below!

Sooo... I made a review post on X (bka Twitter) about the show, and a representative from Roundabout reached out to me to invite me and a guest back once Nicole was performing again. I took my friend, Rick (who has never been to a Broadway play before), on October 8 for #SundayFunday!
