Queen of Katwe: VIP private screening
SVA Theatre | September 23, 2016
While working at BNY Mellon, I was invited to go to a private screening of the Walt Disney produced biographical film, "Queen of Katwe". The invitation came in partnership with The Council of Urban Professionals (CUP).
When I first saw the official trailer about the life of Phiona Mutesi, portrayed by Madina Nalwanga, a Ugandan chess player who participated in the 39th World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, the 40th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, and in the 41st World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway, I knew I wanted to see it on opening night!
"The size of your dreams must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them." - Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Peace Prize Winner & President of Liberia
The quote above is the opening frame of the official trailer. That quote has always been the drive of my focus, to dream big despite my circumstances. It's the same dedicated focus Phinoa had to defy the odds and become a chess champion. I had no idea that God's plan was for me to see this film for free, AND get a chance to witness Lupita Nyong'o, David Oyelowo, and Mira Nair be interviewed by the Editor-at-Large of Essence Magazine, Mikki Taylor! #AllThisBlackExcellence and shout out to Mira Nair. I can't even tell you how many times I watched "Mississippi Masala" growing up!
Gotta love company perks... if you haven't seen this movie yet, you MUST check it out! It's so inspirational and having tissues on hand is very necessary!
