Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch
Music Box Theatre | October 18, 2023
Talk about a front row seat to Black Joy!!!
Tony award-winning director Kenny Leon has done it again! Dare I say this may be his best work yet! This timeless classic written by the late, great Ossie Davis, Purlie Victorious is magically magnificent and still so relevant today. The whole cast is smooth as butter on a biscuit! It was like watching human iron sharpen iron. Just brilliant! The dialogue. The preachin’. The physical comedy of it all… whew!
Kara Young is one to watch. She’s petite and powerful - a scene-stealer in the best sense. The way she commands a stage should be studied. And I’m calling it now, Leslie Odom Jr. WILL win another Tony for Best Actor! He put his whole foot in that performance. Both feet chile. Above the ankles, crew-length deep. I couldn’t help but hang off every word he spoke. He’s in his Broadway bag, and he knows it.
I need to see it again. I have to. It’s like you can’t just eat one potato chip. Or see Beyoncé’s RWT once. And if you do, you keep looking at your concert footage for that feeling again. Then you feel compelled to post it and share it with the world because it’s sooo good!
