American Son
Booth Theatre | December 22, 2018
Whew chile!!! I had to fix my face after seeing the brilliant Broadway play American Son! The amazingly talented Kerry Washington (Kendra) was intense and raw and real, and I ran through the gamut of emotions as I sat on the first row, center stage hanging off of every word, every emotion, and every update (or lack thereof) of her missing 18 year old son.
It was gut wrenchingly captivating yet humorous at times as it dealt openly and honestly about the nuances and oppositional dichotomies of race and racism, the anxiety and pressure one faces while discovering their identity, the projection of blatant stereotypes and systemic biases, and police-community relations especially with Black male citizens. It brought me to tears numerous times. I really wasn’t ready...
This is definitely a MUST SEE, and we need more conversations and creative works like this! Word of advice: Bring tissues! Bravo to the entire cast!
