Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ new play premiered in March on Broadway, and I’ve been dying to see it! Let me tell you why…
Phylicia Rashad makes her Broadway directorial debut. Kara Young, who I said was a scene stealer in Purlie Victorious and one to watch, just became the first Black performer to receive Tony nominations in four consecutive years, earning her latest nod for her role in Purpose. Jon Michael Hill, who hilariously narrates the show, was nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play. Earlier this month, Purpose won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama!
Purpose got 6 Tony nominations, and it’s well deserved! AND it’s such an honor to see LaTanya Richardson Jackson, nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Harry Lennix command the stage! Brilliant! Glenn Davis is also nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play. And Alana Arenas makes her Broadway debut.
Suffice to say, I’m sooo glad I was seated because it’s a hot ticket and truly a MUST SEE!
The beautiful set design, the masterful storytelling, the family drama, the perfect comedic timing, and the incredible cast… absolutely PHENOMENAL!
God, I love Broadway!
